How to choose a wood heater for your home

Every wood heater can look much the same at first. A black box, a glass door, a price. Stand a few side by side and they start to blur together. It is hard to say what really sets one apart from the next. If this is your first wood heater, finding one is easy. Knowing which one suits your home is the hard part.

The best wood heater in Australia is the one that matches your home. Four things decide it. First, the heat output your floor area needs. Second, whether it stands free or sits built into a wall. Third, whether it heats by radiation or convection. Fourth, what the compliance plate says. Get those right and the rest comes down to looks and budget. A wood heater is a tested appliance, with a firebox, air controls and a flue. It is more than the box you see in the room.

Match the heater to the size of your room

Start here. This is the decision people get wrong most often. A wood heater is rated to heat a floor area, measured in square metres. Buy for the area you want warm rather than the whole house.

The heat behaves differently, too. A freestanding unit warms the room it stands in from every side. An inbuilt sends its warmth forward from the glass, which suits a room where you want the heat aimed into the living space.

If you like the built-in look but have no existing fireplace, a zero-clearance inbuilt can be framed into an ordinary wall. It is built to sit safely against combustible materials, so you can create a fireplace where there was none. Beyond that, neither type wins across the board. The right choice depends on your room, your wall, and whether you already have an opening to build into.

Check the compliance plate before you buy

Every wood heater sold in Australia carries a compliance plate. It is a small metal plate, usually fixed to the back or base. It is the quickest way to tell a properly tested heater from an imported box. That box may not meet the rules here.

Since 8 August 2019, every new wood heater sold in Australia must meet two limits:

  • Emissions: no more than 1.5 grams of particulate per kilogram of wood burnt, measured to AS/NZS 4013
  • Efficiency: 60 per cent or higher, measured to AS/NZS 4012

The plate should name both standards. Tested means the model has passed testing in a certified lab, not just a claim on a listing. Cheap imported heaters sold online often skip this. A non-compliant heater can be refused at installation, or restricted by your council.

Efficiency is worth a closer look. A heater rated at 65 per cent turns more of each log into room heat than one at 60 per cent. It burns less wood for the same warmth. Across a full Victorian winter, that gap shows up in the size of your woodpile.

Installation has its own standard, AS/NZS 2918. It sets the flue height, the clearances to nearby walls, and the hearth beneath the heater. Those clearances are a fire-safety matter, not a formality. That is why a wood heater is best fitted by a qualified installer rather than done yourself.

The flue matters more than people expect. On a single-storey home it runs straight up and out through the roof. On a double-storey home it has to pass the upper floor and clear the roofline. That is more work, and it adds to the price. Work this out early, before you settle on a spot.
